Datong and Dali are two indigenous villages located within Taroko National Park. Due to its remote location, the villagers are able to keep their culture and life in the original state. There are about 12 households remaining in Datong and Dali, most of their descendants are either away for education or working in the city. Therefore, people who chose to stay help and treat each other like family in this tranquil settlement. Datong and Dali are self-sufficient and are isolated from the city, so you will find most of the modern inventions are off no use here at Datong and Dali. Instead, people are more connected by this inconvenient lifestyle. You will retrieve the purest emotion sharing with their life stories in front of campfire, and feel asleep in the starry and peaceful mountain.
We follow the trail along the crystal river until we reach the point where we start the climb. You will be amazed by beautiful rocks and unique patterns on the cliff in this trail.
At the end of Shakadang Trail, we hike from Sanjianwu (三間屋) to reach Datong village. The hike is steep and challenging, therefore good stamina is required from here.
Datong Village is located at 900 meters above sea level. We will visit the aborigines here and rest for amazing scenery deep inside of the mountain.
Reach the accommodation for the night
The place we will stay is about one hour away from Datong Village. When the weather is good, you will be shocked by how good the scene is from this place. We will stay with former chief (leader) of the Truku Tribe. Before dinner, we stay in front of the cabin to relax in the yard.
Camp fire with star gazing
If the weather allowes, we will start the fire in the yard. During which, we are very close to each other. We may have the chance to talk to the chief and listen to his singing. We can also explain to you the history of the tribe and of the early Japanese Occupation. This is a perfect time for you to dig deep!
Sunrise on Liwu Mountain
We get up early and hike up to over 1,000 meters for the sunrise on the mountain. The view includes Qingshui Cliff and the Pacific Ocean. It’s simply astonishing!
After the breakfast and farewell to the chief, we departs to Dali Village. The trail is flat and relaxing, we are able to enjoy walking in the forest with fresh air.
It’s used for transporting commodity and daily supply. Due to the high cost, it’s seldom used. When the weather is good, the view from here is one of its kind.
Dali Village is another aboriginal settlement during this tour. We are able to visit a discarded but beautiful church. The houses here are scattered, some of them still remain the original state. We will take a rest enjoying our lunch.
From here we will hike down to Taorko National Park Visitor Center. The view from this trail include the ocean and the settlement close to the national park.
